Southern trains is planning to end access to the railway bridge at Wandsworth Common station for pedestrians not taking a train. The shock news was discovered following an enquiry made by Nightingale ward councillor Sarah McDermott, who had noted Southern putting up posters claiming the bridge was not a public right of way.
The station has been avialble for all to use for several decades and I am backing Sarah's petition to keep it that way. Hundreds of residents use it every day to get access to the Common and it is also an important access route for customers of the small businesses located on Jaggward Way. Southern are taking the action as part of their plan for installing ticket gates at the station, but there must be a pragmatic way of doing this without closing this popular bridge.
