I receive a lot of feedback from local residents on the improvements they would like to see to Memorial Park, our primary green space in the Bay. As such, over the years I have been working with both the Councils, my fellow Conservative councillors and local community groups to shape the project.
Last year we saw the playground upgraded, as well as improved park entrances and crossing points onto surrounding roads for pedestrians, cyclists and those in wheelchairs.
This year we have several further upgrades planned:
- Tennis: the condition of the tennis courts has deteriorated so next month works start on resurfacing, new paint and nets to bring them up to good condition; also, we shall be marking some of the courts for pickleball, to cater for the growing number of people wishing to play this new sport
- You may recall we discussed realigning the tennis courts to open up a youth zone in the two courts adjacent to the community garden. Giles and I completed a letter drop along Station Road to inform residents of these plans and we did not receive any concerns from the residents, therefore we are going ahead with the realignment and provision of a youth zone.
- A new viewing platform is being installed at the pond on the southern boundary. We have been in conversation with the model boat club, and they are happy with the design. A bespoke etched panel is also to be included on the viewing platform that includes some drawings of the members boats. This work is commencing 17th February.
- The pond is also being desilted and cleaned also w/c 17th February.
- We are also pulling together a tender package for the coffee concession at the band stand. This should be going live in the next few weeks.
All of the sports provision will remain free, so that all local residents can take advantage of these excellent facilities.
